May 14th, 2023 Backwoods Orienteering Klub will be hosting an Open event at Carolina North Forest. We will have courses for all abilities, beginner (White) to expert (Red), with starts from 11am to 1:30pm.

There will be a beginner class at 11:45. Anyone taking the beginner class should arrive at 11:30 to check in and pick up equipment before the class. Beginners may also prepare themselves by watching some videos about orienteering.

Sign in and starting point are near Seawell Elementary in Carrboro, 35°56’23.9″N 79°04’44.0″W. Courses close at 2:30pm and be sure to check back in when finished even if you do not complete your course.

Online registration is required. There is no same-day registration. Your chance to register will end Friday May 12th at 5pm, so please do not delay. Registration is closed.

One additional, available course is what we’re calling “expressO”. It will be a 1km course with 10 controls for orienteers to practice their speed in the woods. Controls are 100m apart and easy to find, but the key is to pick the best path through the trees. Seconds may matter. You do not need to register separately for this. We will print some extra maps and anyone who has successfully completed an intermediate course before and wants to try it after their regular course is welcome to.

Radio-O: There will be a Radio-O sprint format course for practice. This format uses the 80m band (3.5 MHz) and a short ~1 km course. The course will feature two loops of 5 transmitters each and a spectator beacon. Time limit is 60 minutes. There will be SI punches (but no flags), so bring your finger stick if you have one.
