Members event at Camp Durant

On Saturday April 13th, club members are welcome to a special event at Camp Durant, part of the Occoneeche Scout Reservation outside of Carthage, NC.  Our event will be part of the Order of the Arrow’s annual “Conclave” and will involve introducing boy scouts to the sport of orienteering.  Approximately 1500 scouts are expected to attend the Conclave (although only a small fraction will try their hand at orienteering.)  BOK thus needs a handful of volunteers to teach small groups of scouts the basics of orienteering.  Afterwards, volunteers are welcome to run one of two expert-level courses on this brand new map.  If you don’t have the time or inclination to help teach the scouts, you are still welcome to come out and run one of the courses.

If you’re planning to attend, you must pre-register here before noon on Friday, April 12.  If you would like to arrive early and help with teaching the scouts, plan on arriving by 9:00 AM.  Whether you come early or late, meet our group in the large open field just south of the Sullivan Training Center (GPS coordinates = 35.337402, -79.548287).  Follow signs for parking, but expect that your parking space may be up to 800 meters away from this field. Start window will be from 9:00 to noon, with control pickup around 12:30.

The map is new and never-before orienteered upon.  Thorough field-checking has only been done for a fraction of the over 2000 acres of the reservation.  Both courses will be completely on the field-checked area which contains many man-made features – shelters, buildings, trails, etc – and a few large natural areas.  The map scale will be 1:7500, and the contour interval is 2.5 meters.  The two courses we’ll offer will have a middle-distance feel, with relatively short legs and many direction changes.  The short course (3.4 km) will be a subset of the long course (4.6 km).
