Open event at Umstead South on May 5, 2019

Weather update: the event is on rain or shine. We cancel only if the park is closed (an update will be posted here in that case). We leave it to you to judge the weather situation and decide if you want to come or not. There is a significant chance of thunderstorms in the forecast for tomorrow, but it looks like it will be sporadic, so very hard to predict if we are going to be affected or not. If you attempt a green or red course please be extra careful as the farthest point of the course will be very far from the shelter area.

We will have an open event at Umstead state park on May 5, 2019. We will offer the usual array of courses, from beginner to advanced:

  • White: 1.7km, 9 controls
  • Yellow: 2.2km, 8 controls
  • Orange: 3.3km, 8 controls
  • Brown: 3.6km, 6 controls
  • Green: 5.4km, 7 controls
  • Red: 7km, 10 controls

Green and Red will have a remote start from the Reedy Creek Lake area, which is about a 15-20 minute walk/jog down from the shelter. Please plan ahead if you want to start later. Finish is at the shelter for all courses.

New for Green and Red is that I will print the control descriptions also on a separate card, so if you have a special holder for that, you can bring it with you.

We will have a beginners’ class at 12:30. If this is your first time trying this sport please arrive by 12:15 so that you can check-in and pick up your map before the class. All courses close and control pickup starts at 3pm.

If you are bringing a group of 5 or more please preregister by May 2 (preregistration has closed, we cannot accept more teams for this event). If you bring a large bus that doesn’t fit in a regular parking spot, you’ll have to park it off-site at a nearby mall (about half a mile away) and walk back to the park. This is becoming more and more important as we are hosting larger groups. We want to maintain a good relationship with the park.

The entrance of the park is off Harrison Avenue, called the Reedy Creek entrance. We start from the lower shelter, North of the parking lot.

The forest is now quite thick, the bugs are out, so please prepare accordingly. Long pants are recommended for courses orange and up.
