October 21 — Night-O at Carolina North

Filed under: Uncategorized by David Waller on October 12th, 2017

On Saturday, October 21, BOK will have a night orienteering event at Carolina North Forest in Chapel Hill.  This event is open only to: BOK members, members of other orienteering clubs, and active members of the US military.  (People in the latter two categories will need to pay $5 registration and possibly $5 for fingerstick rental to help cover our costs.)  Please pre-register here before Friday October 20 at 5:00 PM so that we know how many maps to print.

The start and finish  will be near the parking lot at the end of the dusty road, on the east side of the park.  See map here (GPS coordinates = 35.936437, -79.066078).  This is a mass-start event, so please arrive in time for a 5 minute walk to its 8:00 PM start.  If you start late, you will still need to finish at the mass-start cut-off time, around 9:30.

This will be a 90-minute score-O, in which competitors find, in any order, as many controls as they can in 90 minutes.  Controls will have different point values based on their distance and difficulty.  Generally, control locations will be intermediate/advanced (yellow/orange) level, but the darkness and the complex trail network will make navigation more challenging.  Remember to bring a headlamp and a spare source of light.  No drinking water will be available on the course, and there are no water fountains in the park.  Please remember to bring your own refreshments.

The map will be printed at 1:7500 scale, on a 8.5 x 14″ (legal) page.
