Occoneechee Mnt Expert Event May 5
Join us on May 5 for Expert orienteering in Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area in Hillsborough, NC. Come for the mountain laurel and stay for the steep climbs.
This is a smaller event due to often limited parking, so we will be offering three courses for expert orienteers. Anyone who has successfully completed an expert-level course (i.e., brown, green, red, or blue) is welcome to attend.
Registration is open and you must sign up before 9pm on May 3. Start window will be between 10 am and noon and the courses will close at 2pm.
If the parking lot becomes full, you will need to wait at the park entrance in a queue. Earlier arrivals have a better chance of getting immediate parking, so try to get in before 11am.
The planned courses are:
brown = 3.0 km, 150m of climb
green = 5.1 km, 260m of climb
red = 6.5 km, 340m of climb
The terrain is extremely steep in places, and there can be significantly dense vegetation affecting route choice. Thick vegetation is generally passable, but slow. Extremely steep terrain at Occoneechee is completely impassable and dangerous especially near the quarry.
The mountain top is out of bounds and will be marked as such on the map. Even if there is not a fence around the area, please respect the map’s guidelines to preserve our good relationship with the park.
