New advanced training event added to calendar: Raven Rock (north of the river), Aug 26

After the event last Sunday at Schenck Forest, Josef Trzicky suggested the possibility of holding an informal training next weekend (Sunday, Aug 26) at Raven Rock. He has suggested that this be held in the currently unmapped section of the park north of the Cape Fear River.

This event will serve two purposes. First, Josef has been interested in introducing some more informal training events into our club, similar to what his club in the Czech Republic would hold on a regular basis. To this end, he has already starting coaching some individuals, working on contouring, terrain reading, and moving without compass on guided training walk/runs. I believe that he is hoping to expand coaching and training opportunities with events such as this.

Second, the region that Josef has selected for this event is one that the club might consider mapping in the future, and an informal training event held here would help us to evaluate the potential that this new terrain holds for future events.

I want to stress that this is an extremely informal event, with the following limitations:

1) The area is not currently mapped for orienteering. We will be using USGS topo maps for the event.
2) Noone will be vetting the control locations. All setup for this informal training will occur on the morning of the training.
3) We will not be hanging controls. Ribbons will be hung at the control locations.
4) We will not be posting (or even calculating) times for the event. If your time matters to you, bring a watch.

The restrictions for this informal training event will be similar to our Advanced events: Members only, Advanced only, (fingerstick possession irrelevant, since there will be no controls), please preregister by Friday (just so I know how many maps to print out).

Directions to where we will meet: From Raleigh, take US-401 S. About 4mi before you would cross the Cape Fear River (roughly 10mi after 55 comes down from the north into 401, in Fuquay-Varina), turn R (west) on Christian Light (SR-1412). In about 3.5mi, turn L (west) on River Rd (SR-1418). There is an equestrian parking area on the left (south) side of the road in about 1.5mi.

We will meet in that parking area at 10:00am. There will be a limited start window. Honestly, I don’t know exactly what Josef has planned, so I suggest just arriving close to 10:00am.
