Open Event, Raven Rock, 12 December
We have reached our participant limit for this event, and registration is now closed.
Just added: We will now offer a beginner’s class at 9:15 AM. If you want to learn the basics of orienteering in a small group setting, sign up for either the 9:00 or the 9:30 timeslot, and be at the park shelter around 9:15.
We will have an open event at Raven Rock State park on Sunday, December 12. For at least the past few months, weekends at Raven Rock have been overcrowded with visitors, and parking can be extremely hard to find. We were lucky to be able to hold this event, and had to work closely with the park in order not to overburden their limited resources. As a result, there is room for only 30 participants, and we will be starting earlier than usual.
Because it has been less common during the pandemic for us to offer beginner’s courses, we wanted to make sure that we offered something for beginner and intermediate runners, as well as a fun option for more advanced orienteers. As a result, we will have a beginner (white) course of appx. 1.8 km, an intermediate (yellow) course of appx. 2.4 km, and a 90-minute score course for advanced and expert orienteers. A “score” course is one in which you decide which controls you want to punch and in what order you want to punch them. You must finish within 90 minutes, or lose points. We are currently not planning on having a beginner’s class (although this may change depending on our volunteer support.)
Register here, and sign-up to arrive in a particular 30-minute timeslot between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. When enough people have registered for a timeslot, it will be closed and unavailable. You must register before 5:00 PM on Friday, December 10 in order to allow us time to print maps.
On the day of the event, pick up your map at the park shelter (GPS = 35.461878, -78.911501).
We will implement the following procedures to help with social distancing.
1. Your assigned starting timeslot will help spread participants out over time
2. All courses will have a remote start and finish.
3. Masks are required at the registration area.
