Join us again for a unique, fun experience on New Year’s Day. This time at Bond Park in Cary. We plan a mass start in the Multi-use Field 35.78342288, -78.826243093 at 11:00 am, but keep an eye on this page in case weather makes us change the start location. Be sure to arrive 30 minutes before start to pick up your map and get final instructions 15 minutes before the start.

We will be having a “short” Bumble. Quantico Orienteering has a good introduction to the concept of a bumble. https://www.qocweb.org/sites/default/files/Bumble_2024_Explanation.pdf The exciting twist to our New Year’s version of a Bumble will include a maze O for two of the windows, making for a maximum of 7 windows.

Beginners are also welcome to come out to try the Explorer course. Like a score O, find whatever controls you can. Explorers may start at 10:30am and must be done by 1pm. New orienteers coming out to try the explorer course should watch our introductory videos at the top of our newcomer information page.

For those not familiar with maze O, it’s a very small course, maybe 10m x 10m, taped off in the shape of, wait for it, a maze. You’ll have 7 or so controls and it goes faster than a sprint. Quick map reading is vital and seconds are crucial. For a visual similar to the map you’ll have, see these results from Cascade Orienteering

The rules for our combined Bumble + Maze O will be as follows:

• Everyone takes 4 or more windows of their choice.
• Everyone must do 2 mazes, which count as 2 of their total windows.
• A maze window may not be the first window taken.
• Two Mazes may not be done as back-to-back windows.
• Time limit is 90 minutes.

Registration will close at 5pm New Year’s Eve.
