We had a very fun event at a brand new venue — White Pines Nature Preserve. To keep things interesting, I offered three different loop courses, and people could choose how many loops they wanted to do. Most did one loop; some did two, and a few brave folks did all three. After finishing, we celebrated with cold beverages and cupcakes.
I learned a couple of lessons at this event. First, I only realized after the event that I should have had people punch a control at the map exchange. Without such a control, the times on the pre- and post- map exchange legs got added together. Because people did loops in different orders, different legs were added, and it becomes impossible to compare splits on these legs. Along these lines, note in the scores below that each course permutation is listed as a separate course. But because everyone did all of the same legs, just in different orders, overall times and splits should be comparable.
The other lesson learned was to be extremely careful when, as a coursesetter, one put controls very close to each other. I had a few controls that were probably within 30m of each other, which is generally WAY too close. Despite my warnings to be careful about checking control codes, a couple of our best orienteers ended up mispunching because of this. In the future, I’ll think harder about the necessity have having controls so close; and if they really are structurally necessary, I will clue people in more to the specific places where control codes should be really checked before punching.
