Umstead Park was again a fun host for a BackwoodsOK open event, with numbers of starts dominated by orienteers just learning or moving up to the next level of Yellow or Orange. 26 unique runners between White and Yellow and a total of 21 starts on Orange. Everyone was enthusiastic and we hope to see you out at more events, learning and improving your skills.
With the added option of a Blue course, that split up entrants between the expert course a bit, but we still had enough runners to see a variety of route choice on many legs, some avoiding climb and others plowing through.

A number of our radio orienteers came out to practice their 2m skills and climb some hills. The most common courses were the Short and the Long. The size of the map and lack of finish chute did not make it obvious where the beacon was, so some runners went to the finish, first. Erin’s score has an asterisk for this reason.
With both foot O and radio O happening, the event needed help from volunteers. Alan, Charles, Tatyana and Vladimir all helped pick up controls. Adalia helped set and pick up, as well as helping with registration and coaching on the orange course. Mirabel helped design the more creative parts of the white course.
