The rain held off, and we had a blast.  We used a new format (dubbed a ‘Foxhunt’ by Peter Thelin) in which score-O competitors were required to return to me after each control that they punched.  Meanwhile, I was constantly moving around the perimeter of the park.  It was virtually impossible to plan an overall route for the day and stick with it — rather, competitors had to think on the fly and make quick decisions in the moment.  In addition to the typical mental burdens of orienteering (e.g., staying on course, planning a route, maneuvering around obstacles), people also had to estimate the progress of the common moving control.  Mis-estimations could cost a lot of time.  From my perspective, it was fun to see people gradually adapting to the format.  At the beginning of the race, most people tended to chase me down from behind.  By the end, people had learned to ‘aim off’, trying to ensure that they came out in front of me.

After a pretty big initial mistake, Imre Polik quickly became adept at this format, and ended up taking home the win.  Robert and Brian provided very close competition, though.  Congratulations to Imre!

This turned-out to be such a fun event, that I’ll try to put a similar one on the schedule for next year.

I had to hand-craft a few of the results that follow.  Most notably, I had to completely re-construct Gary and Peter’s course after (stupidly) handing Peter the clear unit instead of the finish unit when they were done.  As a result, their split times are complete junk, although their overall time should be correct.  A few competitors also over-loaded their fingerstick’s memory capacity and I had to manually insert a few extra controls for them.

Thanks to Peter Thelin for suggesting this ‘Foxhunt’ format as a result of his visit to the Triangle in 2017.  Also thanks to Patrick and Kelly Sears, Kevin Frankowski, Imre Polik, Tatyana Stemkovski, and Susan Carl for helping gather the controls after the event.

  1. I agree this was a really fun event – challenging from start to finish!

  2. Totally agreed. I love events where competitors can see each other yet they are generally going in totally different directions. Having to touch base with Dave always brought us back together but then we scattered off in different directions.
