Results – Open Orienteering & ARDF at Gray Owl Jan 29-30

Friday night brought at least 5″ of snow to Gray Owl, but only rain and cold to the Triangle. We ended up canceling Saturday but not everyone got the message, so 4 hearty people showed up around 11am. Not only was the ground white, but many controls were buried under the snow, especially in the Rock Garden. This really slowed everyone down. But thanks to Vladimir for uncovering the controls that he went to. On one control, Vladimir walked around the control for 10 minutes before noticing a tip of a corner sticking up.
Everyone on Sunday was thankful for our Saturday runners. However, Ruth then made a huge mistake for the expert runners on Sunday if she had to print a map for them after they arrived. Ruth forgot to put the 1:4,000 scale map of the Rock Garden on the back of the map. With the details in that map, it’s way too busy for a 1:10,000 version, but everyone found the controls in spite of not having the blown up map.
On top of everything else, an SI stick was lost on Saturday but found on Sunday.
We had a small turnout, but we had a lot of successful first timers, both for orienteering and ARDF. The ARDF was on the more technical 2 meter course, which is the most difficult place to start.

Everyone is welcome at our January 29-30 Orienteering and ARDF (Radio Orienteering) event at our Gray Owl house in Asheboro. The event directors are Joseph & Ruth

    • 1725 Gray Owl Road, Asheboro, NC. (35.634843, -79.881873) There is a control on our mailbox at the intersection of Hopewell Friends and Gray Owl Road. Drive 1/4 mile on Gray Owl and take the first left turn onto our driveway. Drive 1/4 mile to the turnaround, turn around and park only on the right side (east side) of the driveway as you are heading back out. Do not drive on the grass at all! Do not park in the turnaround!

Beginner Instruction

Beginner instruction will be available on Saturday 11:15am & 12:15pm. On Sunday beginner instruction will be at 10:15am, 11:15am & 12:15pm. Please watch our video class and compass instruction so you will have the basics. Then, we can answer questions and help you get started.

There is time to do both Orienteering and ARDF!

  • The orienteering courses will be the same on both days.
  • The ARDF courses are short so that you can take the ARDF course as well as an orienteering course on the same day.
    • The two ARDF courses are very different. 80m on Saturday, 2m on Sunday.
    • We got our first set of 2m rental receivers, so this will be a good time to try 2m on a short set of controls.
  • There are two different Brown and Green courses so that if you come out both days, you can do both the 80m and 2m short ARDF courses and then take one of the expert courses each day as well.
    • These Brown-B & Green-B courses reuse some of the same course-A controls, but only one leg on each course is the same and it is going in the opposite direction.
  • Expert level participants can start as early as 9:00 am so there is plenty of time to get both an orienteering and ARDF course in with a rest at lunchtime.
  • The remote start for orienteering courses and the 2m ARDF course is the same. Therefore, if you are planning to take one of the remote start and finish orienteering courses as well as the 2m ARDF course on Sunday, you can leave your ARDF stuff at the start, and then, from the orienteering finish, it is only a 400m walk back to the ARDF start. (We’ll loan you an extra SI stick for the second course.)
