Here are the Weekend’s results. The details for the event follow the results.

We had a beautiful weekend. It was warm on Saturday but the rain held off until I was picking up controls. We had great success with the FoxOring with new people trying and succeeding. The general feeling was that the courses were tough, and many people bailed without finishing, mostly because of the heat. To our surprise there were no White and only one Yellow participant. Very different from our last event. Fortunately Ruth decided to consider the Sprint in the Rock Garden as an additional event, so those who didn’t finish their whole course were competitive in the Rock Garden Sprints.

Event invitation details:

Orienteering Courses: We will have White – Blue on Saturday and Sunday. There will be the same courses on both days. The Orange – Blue courses will start in the Rock Garden with a sprint-like beginning with up to 14 controls in 1.6 km. Then Brown through Blue will have classic style courses on the western ridge on the newly field checked map. The southern section has not been previously used at any event. Brown through Red will have a remote finish on the western edge (where we had the start last time). Blue will continue on the east side to finish at the house. Green, Red & Blue will all begin the same way using the same map, and will be able to change to a longer or shorter course while enroute.

ARDF FoxOring update: All the controls will be on the east side of the large creek. Three of the closest controls will use the striped “sprint” poles so they will be easier to see to help you get started. The rest of the controls will use gray poles that will be used in the US Champs in October. Most of the controls have a fast beep beep beep pattern, however where I thought that the most sensitive receivers could hear two controls at the same time, one of the controls will have a slower beeeeep beeeeep beeeeep pattern. Control descriptions will indicate which controls are slow &/or striped.

ARDF (Radio Orienteering): The FoxOring course will only be on Saturday, and we will offer instruction throughout the day.
Both: If you want to do both ARDF and Orienteering sign up for the ARDF so you can rent a receiver. You can decide if you want an orienteering course after you finish the FoxOring. No need to pre-register for both if you do them on the same day. You can purchase the additional map on line.

Advanced and Expert courses (Orange – Blue) start at the Rock Garden, which is a complex area mapped at 1:4,000 and Brown through Blue finish on a new 1 sq km section of the new 1:10,000 map. This will be like beginning your course with a Sprint and finishing like a Classic course. We will calculate the “Sprint” times as well as total times.

The Beginning and Intermediate level courses (White and Yellow) will start and finish near the house. We will have beginner classes at 11am and noon for people who are unfamiliar with orienteering. Here are a couple of videos on How to do an Orienteering Course, How to Use a Map and Compass, and Intro to the Map and Contour Lines. We will be happy to answer your questions and review these skills any time. If you would rather take the in person 20 minute course, then choose one of the beginner class start slots at 11am or noon.

ARDF: We will have a FoxOring course on Saturday only. ARDF is “Radio Orienteering” where there are transmitters, not shown on the map, and you find them with a directional receiver. In the FoxOring form of ARDF, we draw locations on the map like orienteering, except there is neither a flag nor the transmitter in the circle. Say What! The very low power transmitter is within 100m from the center of the circle shown on the map. The good news is that it stays on all the time. The bad news is you can only hear it when you are closer to it than 150m. The course is a laid out as a Score Course, which means you can take the controls in any order. To complete a course you must find at least one transmitter, then the high power Beacon, which is near the finish, and finally, the Finish. And do that within the 2 hour time limit.

Here is how FoxOring works. Before the start you tune into the sample FoxOring transmitter so you have the correct frequency and know what it sounds like. Then, after you start, you figure out what order makes sense and you and navigate toward your first control while listening for the transmitter. By the time you get to the circle you should hear the transmitter. There is no need to go to the center of the circle, so as soon as you hear the transmitter you head directly toward it.

There is not an orienteering flag at the control. The SI-box is mounted on gray poles (6 controls), or red/white striped poles (3 controls) located at the transmitter. You punch in like usual and navigate to the next control. Keep track of the time because if you are over the two-hour time limit then you will be disqualified.

We have receivers to rent if you want to try ARDF. (Don’t forget to bring your plug in headphones.) Only one person can listen to the receiver at a time, so if you are going with someone then be sure to rent 2 receivers. Receiver rental will be reserved for starts in the 10am and 1pm arrival slots. This way the first group should be back so the second group can use a receiver. (We will only require a timely return if all the receivers are rented out.) People with their own receivers can choose any start slot on Saturday.

Gray Owl Location: 1725 Gray Owl Road, Asheboro, NC. (35.634843, -79.881873) There is a control on our mailbox at the intersection of Hopewell Friends and Gray Owl Road. Drive 1/4 mile on Gray Owl and take the first left fork onto our driveway. Drive 1/4 mile to the turnaround, then turn around and only park on the right side (east side) of the driveway as you are heading back out. Do not drive on the grass at all! Do not park in the turnaround!
