Results: Dorothea Dix Orienteering May 19, 2024

The forecast rain didn’t materialize at all, so we had beautiful cool windy cloudy conditions. Control 68 didn’t beep for anyone or show up when they downloaded, so we removed it from the results so that no one had a mispunch for “missing” 68. I guess the control felt guilty for not beeping, because when I got home it started beeping continuously, finally it stopped, but the light stayed on and is still on Monday morning as I write this. Clearly it isn’t a battery problem. Service off stick has no effect.

No one brought their dogs for the DogSense, but people borrowed our dogs and their results show up under their names.

I was told a control and the finish were off by a couple of meters, but that didn’t afffect anyone’s time by more than a few seconds, and didn’t change the order of the results.

Radio orienteering in the buildings was more complex than usual, so some controls were more difficult to hear,t accurate directions or estimate distance. No one had those problems on the field side of the sprint.

Thanks to Matt, Adalia, Mirabel, Tony Lawrence, and Evgeny for picking up controls, transmitters, and dog odor cans. A bit different than the usual control pickup.

Orienteering Sprint Courses

We wil have 2 long and 2 short Orienteering Sprint courses. Sprint shorts (aprox 2k) are a subset of long (aprox 3k), This measurement, includes going around obstructions. Sprint 1’s are east of the tracks, in and around the buildings. Sprint 2’s are west of the tracks, mostly in the open areas and surrounding vegetation. Since the long and short sprints are nested, if you want to run both a long and short sprint, then choose long1 and short2 or visa versa for the most variety.

Radio Orienteering Sprint

We will have the full Radio Orienteering sprint format which includes the 5 “slow” foxes, the Spectator control, the 5 “fast” foxes, the Beacon, and the finish. We will use the bamboo sprint foxes and they will be at regular orienteering controls. The complete sprint will be about 3k. The RadioO controls are also sprint controls, so you should do the RadioO course first.

Explorer Course

This is an “All Controls” score course. There is no time limit and you can take as many or as few controls as you like. It is primarly designed for those who want a low pressure “find what ever you want” orienteering event.

If you choose to clear the course it is about 5k and has 36 controls, however the SI-8 sticks that we rent and many of you have purchased only hold 30 controls, so we will loan you an aditional finger stick without charge (unless you lose it) if you need one. The SI-9 holds 50 controls and the SI-10 holds 128

DogScent Orienteering

Before you start the DogScent Orienteering you should teach your dog to tell you when he finds a BIRCH oil odor can. (See below)

DogTrail is more like a string course. 10 controls on a 400m marked trail – some with odor, some empty. You punch every control where there is a can containing Birch odor concealed in the leaves by the control. You get 2 points for every correct find and lose 1 point for every error.

DogMap is a 10 control score course about 2k long. Some of the controls have a BIRCH odor can near them. You punch all the controls you visit for 1 point each. Then 10 SECONDS OR MORE LATER you punch it again IF THERE IS A BIRCH ODOR CAN near the control. (You need to wait at least 10 seconds for the second punch to show.) Besides the 1 point for finding the control you get 2 points for each correct identification, and lose 1 point for each error. If you don’t visit a control there is no score and no error for that control whether there is an odor can or not.

Train your dog to tell you if the BIRCH oil is present.

  • Purchase Birch oil and scent cans (links are to Amazon – we get no kickback)
  • Put a drop or two of the Birch oil on a Q-tip end and put the Q-tip end in the can.
  • Show the can with the Birch to your pup to smell and treat him. After a few times you can give him a command you would to use as a mark like sit or paw. As soon as he does, give your pup a treat. Do this a few times.
  • Repeat this several times a day for a few days until your pup is doing the command when he smells the birch can.
  • Now put down 2 empty cans and one Birch can a few feet apart.
  • Nudge him away if he marks on an empty can and reward him when he marks the birch can.
  • When your pup gets the idea he is ready for the event.
  • By the way, keep the birch cans away from the unscented cans, and once a birch can, always a birch can. Keep the birch jar and birch can in a closet inside a glass jar to keep the odor (mostly) contained.
