Dix Night Event Results August 28, 2021
It finally cooled a bit and got dark with no clouds to reflect the city lights and no moon. The parking lots and around the buildings were lit, but mostly that affected ones night vision and didn’t help finding controls. Dix is mostly open, and the controls were set so no one needed to go into the woods. Much of the area mapped as white as overgrown. The Strategic Course has come complex rules (see below the results). No one cleared the Strategic Course and only Imre cleared the Standard Score Course. I apologize for one misset control which was off about 70m. It probably wouldn’t have been a problem in the daytime, but caused some difficulty at night.

Good news, Ruthie figured out how to get the control descriptions on the map.

Course Details: There are two classes, Standard and Strategic! The map for both is the front and back of letter size paper with a scale of 1:5,000. There are 30 controls. All have our usual control flags. 28 controls will have reflectors, and two will not have reflectors. Control descriptions will be separate from the map, will not be on the map, as well as separate and will be handed out well in advance. (But you probably won’t need them.)
For the Standard course there are 30 controls each worth one point. The length will be about 7k to clear the course.
Strategic Course Rules:
- Odd numbered controls are worth 10 points. They can be used multiple times but only the first time can count for points
- Even Numbered controls are worth 5 points. They can only be used once.
- Odd numbered controls will only count when followed by an Even Numbered control.
- Even Numbered controls will only count the first time they are used and when preceded by an Odd numbered control
- Odd numbered controls can be used more than once to activate Even Numbered controls, but the Odd numbered control’s points will NOT be counted after their first use. Note: Even if your first visit to an odd doesn’t have points (because it is not followed by an even control) it will count as a first use.
Example: 47(10p), 50(5p), 52(0p), 61(10p), 64(5p), 61(0p), 66(5p), 73(0p), 75(10p), 60(5p),73(0p), 62(5p) Total=55 points.
Note that 73 didn’t count the first time because it was followed by another odd, and didn’t count the second time because it had already been used. (Don’t expect results right away.)
Everyone will have 10 minutes to study the map before the mass start.
There will be a briefing at 8:00 pm. Maps will be handed out at 8:20,and the MASS START will be at 8:30. After you have your map you may leave the start area to preposition yourself, but you may not punch a control before the 8:30 pm start time. Controls punched before 8:30 pm will not count. I will blow a whistle at the 8:30 start time.
The night event at Dix Park will start at the Gazebo between Blair & Hunt Drive on Umstead Drive (35.771347, -78.661458).
The course closes at 9:30. Late arrivals may start as they arrive but must finish by 9:30.
