Umstead Whispering Pines

It was a return trip to South Umstead Whispering Pines Campground, but not a rerun of October’s event. Anticipating the usual November event weather — cold, cloudy and windy — the start and finish for all courses were placed in the campground, close to the parking area. But this year the weather provided a remarkable twist: it was seasonably cool, sunny, and just about perfect in every respect. We heard only nice comments regarding the courses, and most of the competitors completed at least one course successfully, so we trust that most were pleased… or were simply deliriously happy to have such a nice day for the event.
We had a great turnout which included an enthusiastic crew of girl scouts from Troops 1719, 1574, 757 and 1375 who comprised 16 teams. We also had a crew of boy scouts, and our usual great group of outdoor enthusiasts who came out for a beautiful day of orienteering.
There were a few snafus, most notably the printer which was convinced that it was actually a control punch: a situation that prevented most participants from getting a printout of their results. But the competitors’ data was recorded successfully and the results are provided here.

A few notes regarding Results
As Charles noted above, there was a problem with the download box (the box connected to the printer) having been programmed to be a normal control. It took Artem and I a while to determine that this was the reason we weren’t getting any printouts; unfortunately, this also meant that punches were not being saved by the download box off the finger sticks.
When we finally reset the box, we called everyone to repunch the download box; we also took all the rental sticks and downloaded them. However, a number of people had left by that time, and we were forced to obtain results using the information available to us.
What was available were the start and finish boxes, which store a record of when each stick punched in at them. (Whenever you punch a box, two things happen: The fingerstick stores what box was punched and at what time, and the box stores what fingerstick punched and at what time.) So, we read out those two boxes, and I modified the results software to calculate total times from that source if a full download did not exist.
What is published below are the results from both the download box when possible and just (finish – start) times to fill in any gaps. Place numbers are given only for those people for which the full download was present (since those are the only results for which it was possible to check that all controls were actually punched in order). Splits are displayed when available.

(If you -really- want your splits for this event, remember the full punches are still stored on your SI fingerstick. It would be possible to download at the next event (before you clear), and then to extract that download by hand and process it into these results. Please let me know if you want to do this; I will have to know which people to expect this from when processing the results from the next event.)
