Orienteering Results at Gray Owl & ARDF May 23-24
Charles set another excellent ARDF course so we could practice before Patrick’s event the next weekend. Three diehards competed at Robbins Branch in the Birkhead Wilderness on Saturday, and then we three joined another 24 for an Orienteering course on Sunday. Everyone had to sign up for a particular time to start so we never had more than 6 hanging out on a 1/4 acre forest & lawn.
The Orange course used a subset of the Red controls. So the Orange runners should be pleased that they found them!
Joseph and Ruth designed courses that were deemed excellent by many competitors. The temperature was in the 80s, the humidity in the 90s and the thunderstorms never showed up. Everyone returned exhausted and soaked. One of the kids played in the sprinkler and several adults rinsed off under the hose.

OOPS: We know that Boris and Keith are fast, but the laws of physics prohibit them from traveling as fast or faster than light or bending time backwards, therefore the time sync on control 46 and/or 47 must be in error. A preliminary analysis indicates that control 46 should have its time moved forward by 20 seconds. When controls are picked up on Tuesday , we will check the times on the controls and update the results with the corrected times.
Boy was I optimistic. It wasn’t just controls 46 and/or 47. Below are the adjusted results, but that doesn’t mean they are correct. I have been setting courses for over 40 years never considering the time drift of SI-boxes. I set them in early march after the time change and assume they will be fine for the next 6 months. I thought that even if they drifted they would drift together so it wouldn’t matter. Since we rarely set short sprints, and apparently had some luck because the only time we had a problem (that we noticed) was when a control didn’t get updated for some reason. That was until Boris finished a leg in -8 seconds and Keith in 0 seconds. No problem, I’ll fix the out-of-sync control and all will be well.
That is not the way it worked out. As I said, the controls were all synced to UTC time. The variations ranged from 12 to 68 seconds fast. The biggest offender was #47. In the “corrected” results I subtracted 35 seconds to get its error somewhat in line with other errors so that it wouldn’t produce impossible results. But the errors are much more prevalent. The following table shows the control number, the seconds to be subtracted from each box to match UTC time, and the seconds to be added to a leg to get a correct running time for that leg. So, if you just want to compare your time to someone else go ahead and use the posted results. However if you want to know your actual time for a particular leg, then add the seconds in the column adjacent to the control at the end of the leg you are interested in. Blue shading shows the controls that are in the “Rock Garden” on the 1:4000 map.
