Results – Gray Owl Expert Orienteering, Fox-O, Night events, and 6 & 12-hour Virtual Rogaine 2/1/25 & 2/2/25

On February 1st, BOK held a rogaine training event starting/finishing at Gray Owl in the NE corner of Birkhead Mountains Wilderness. This consisted of two 6-hour “loops” (one during the day and one during the night). Most of the controls on each course didn’t have physical flags. Instead, participants had to use the UsynligO and Livelox apps on their phones for verification.

Those daring enough to join me for this training were warned about “inevitable kinks.” Participants were told that they could use as many Usynligo hints as they’d like (temporary spatial, directional, or distance tips provided in the app), but that number would be published. Participants were also warned that only the contour lines and not other map objects were georeferenced on the Thornburg map (SW side).

Everyone took this in stride and escaped the wilderness unharmed. Perfect weather coupled with Joseph’s and Ruth’s hospitality (and delicious chili) helped tremendously. Course designer Dave speculated that no one would clear either loop, and he was right. It appears that I came closest on the daytime loop, but this was with the help of 17 hints. In contrast, runner-up Brian Thompson reportedly only used 3 hints!

Loop 2 started just after 6 pm and most everyone could visit one or two controls in the dwindling daylight before the real test of nighttime navigation began. As expected, the going was slower in the dark and there was less traffic into the far SW region of the course. It appears that I visited the most controls before midnight, catching occasional glimpses of a light in the woods from runner-up Charlie Roberts.

Interesting “heat maps” for the loops along with some other photos and personal observations/notes from the event are provided in this blog post. The average distance traveled between each control for loop 2 (night) was 1.6 km/control vs. 1.2 km/control for loop 1 (day). Apparently a more distinct, but less direct path is preferred at night.

There will be a unique expert-level Rogaine training opportunity held concurrently with a Classic Orienteering event at Gray Owl in the Birkhead Wilderness on Saturday, February 1st and Sunday, February 2.

Courses

  • Rogaine: Two 6-hour “loops” with map exchange. One in daylight the other optionally at night
    • Finger stick not necessary for Rogaine loops
      • You are welcome to use finger sticks. The physical controls will have SI-stations. You can get a printout of those stations as well as start and finish.
    • UsynligO and LiveLox required for Rogaine loops
  • Orienteering:
    • Brown 3.8k, 13 Controls
    • Green 5.6, 15 Controls
    • Red 7.0, 18 Controls
  • 1.5hr Night-O 7.3k 35 Controls
    • Mass start at 6pm
    • Late starters still get 90min
    • Course closes 10pm
    • Control Values
      • 13 regular controls with reflectors 1pt each
      • 12 regular controls (no reflector) 3pt each
      • 10 foxO controls (SI-stations on black poles) 5pt each
        • FoxO controls will not be transmitting
  • FoxOring Day 4.5k 10 Controls
    • Transmitting from 9am – 4pm both days

Schedule

    • 9am – 4pm Orienteering courses, FoxOring and first Rogaine 6hr loop (Everyone back by 4pm)
    • 4pm – 5:30pm Dinner at Gray Owl
    • 6pm – Mass start of the Orienteering Night-O, and 6hr Rogaine loop. Finish at Midnight.
      • Late starts for Night Orienteering still get the whole 90 min.
  • Sunday
    • 9am – Orienteering and FoxOring courses and either Rogaine 6hr loop (Everyone back by 4pm)
    • 4pm – 5pm – Control Pick Up (Please plan to help pickup.)

Rogaine participants will be required to run the UsynligO  (pronounced “You Sin Leo!” it means invisible in Swedish) and Livelox apps (both free) on their phones and carry their phone with them on the course. This is because most (but not all) of the controls will be virtual. Thus there is no physical flag in the field, but instead the Usynligo app gives an audible alert (most of the time) when the phone enters a control radius on the map. Interested participants are strongly encouraged to download and become familiar with both apps prior to this event. Please read Google Doc Usynligo guidelines.

Rogaine scoring depends on Usynligo successfully keeping score. No alert = no point(s). Based on a 4-hour training at Birkhead, the app sometimes lagged by 30 seconds or less. Effective troubleshooting involved exiting and re-entering the control radius from a different direction. Sometimes it only buzzes. To check to see if the control has resistered open the app and check to see if it shows that the control as been found.

Orienteering Participants will use finger sticks, Have physical controls, and are required to use LiveLox for the Night Orienteering segment.

Tent and car camping is OK on the Gray Owl property.

Location & Directions: 1725 Gray Owl Road, Asheboro, NC. (35.634843, -79.881873) There is a control on our mailbox at the intersection of Hopewell Friends and Gray Owl Road. Drive 1/4 mile on Gray Owl and take the first left turn onto our driveway. Drive 1/4 mile to the turnaround, turn around and park only on the right side (east side) of the driveway as you are heading back out. Do not drive on the grass at all! Do not park in the turnaround!
