Results – December Score-O, Eno River

Sunday was a fantastic day for orienteering in the Triangle, and BOK’s annual December Score-O was a great way to enjoy the outdoors along the beautiful Eno River.  With the initiative and help of Matt Kirk, we finally connected our “Bobbitt” Hole map to our “Fews Ford” map, producing one map that covers over 12 miles of the river.  We have now mapped nearly the entire park; although its future growth to the west should provide us with even more orienteering opportunities.

Congratulations to Matt Kirk and Kevin McCabe, the only two competitors who were able to visit every control in under 4 hours.  Matt bested Kevin on time and came away with a well-deserved win.  You can read more about Matt’s experience on his blog post here.  Once again, Vladimir Stemkovski cruised to victory in the 2-hour division.  Vladimir has now won this division six times in the past ten years.

December Score-O 2023, Invitation

On Sunday, December 03, BOK will host its 10th annual December Score-O along the beautiful Eno River.  (“Score-O” means that there is no predetermined route; instead, competitors decide which controls they want to visit, and in which order.)  This event will have 2-, and 4-hour options and is open to any orienteer or adventure racer who has successfully completed the equivalent of an advanced (orange, brown, green, red, or blue) orienteering course.   All races will start from the Cole Mill Shelter (GIS = 36.058184, -78.980579), with the 4-hour race starting at 10:00 AM and the 2-hour race starting at noon. 

For those who want to plan their route beforehand, maps will be available for pickup as early as 9:00 for 4-hour competitors and 11:00 for the 2-hour competitors.  The map will be printed at 1:10000 scale, on three separate letter-sized pages.  Please bring any materials that you use to mark up your map (e.g., tape, highlighter, distance wheel, pins, string, etc.) 

Visiting every control on the course can be done with less than 20km total straight-line distance between controls, and it is fully expected that some of the competitors will be able to do this within 4 hours.  Completing the course will be facilitated by crossing the river on foot.  If you plan on doing this, it’s recommended that you bring materials (e.g. Ziploc bags) that can protect any electronics that you carry.  Drinking water will not be available anywhere on the course.  Competitors — especially those in the 4-hour competition — are thus strongly encouraged to carry their own water supply or water treatment devices/methods. 

Use this QR code to access the event after 2:00 PM. If you recorded it you open the app and select the “Eno-East December Score-O 2023” event.

The event will be posted to Livelox, and will become available to see at the end of the event at 2pm. In order to post to Livelox you need to open a Livelox account (Livelox.com). The easiest way to use it is to download the Livelox app. There is no need to select an event when you start. Start recording in the app when you start and Stop recording when you finish. Then at 2pm when the event is published on Livelox you will be able to select the event from the app and then view yours and everyone’s routes. Livelox has an easy way to automatically upload your route from Garmin, Strava and others. You can go into your “User Account” and choose to edit “Connections to route-providing applications” where you can set up automatic connections from your other account to Livelox. You can also upload a route file or even draw your route by hand.
