Birkhead Wilderness 9/27/2009 Advanced Event Results
Let me start by saying that Birkhead is a technically difficult area, and Josef designed courses that took serious advantage of that characteristic and added an additional psychological twist at the first control.
At advanced events we sometimes take shortcuts to make it easier on the course setters he designed the courses but didn’t make an earlier trip to check the locations and hang ribbons. Then went out to set the controls a half hour before the first starter . Without the ribbons he was just running the course with a head start, but no controls to find. That is much harder! He has done it before and it hasn’t been a problem, but it caught up with us this time. He set the first control 60 m too far up the creek (without a paddle). The effect of this error is that your route choice determined whether you found #1 right away (like before you should have found it) or much later, or much much later. Well the people who found it right away really weren’t so lucky when it came time to find #2 because when you took a bearing you missed #2 and ended up equally between #2 and #3. Because we are using the electronic punching I was able to recalculate the results as though the start was at #2. So I am reporting both sets of results.
The rain let up just before we got there, but the streams were not running and there wasn’t much standing water. The area has really good drainage. We only lost one person who we recovered out on the road about a mile away. Thank you cell phones! (It really is a good idea to take your phone with you in a plastic bag.)

Just wanted to give you a heads up that I didn’t run the course – a twisted ankle forced me to turn back to the start. Hence there must be some mistake regarding my result – perhaps it’s just the wrong name posted?
Joseph’s reply:
Ok, so who is the missing person?
Sorry friends, excuse me please. I’m sorry. In the morning I was very nervous and trying to go very fast. Control number 41 was 50m west and control number 54 was 60m north of where they should have been.
Sorry,Josef.
Josef,
I am sure I speak for everyone… We are grateful for the work you do setting courses and mapping for BOK. We easily forgive you for your occasional error as we hope everyone will forgive us for our errors. Your apology is easily accepted.
Joseph
I think I need to take some blame on the misplaced controls, because of me being late with the controls… But it was still a fun course and an adventure for everyone 🙂
My report is here: http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2009/09/sep-27-in-birkhead-wilderness.html
Joseph, IMHO, “starting from #2” results are misleading, as #54 (#14) was misplaced too.
Also Tanya’s entry is missing. She couldn’t find #1 and #14 on Brown (both misplaced), but took everything else except for the last one (as she went straight to the finish after not finding #14)
OK – I’ll admit it – I got lost. I wanted the challenge of orienteering on a new map and I got it in full measure. I felt young and foolish (stupid?) again. We all know that orienteering can be very humbling, and I was humbled.
Follow that needle until – uh oh, Earth to Joe – you’re not in Kansas anymore and nothing matches up. Lesson #1 – don’t loose contact (especially on a new map). Well we’re eventually supposed to hit a trail so let’s (Lisa was still with me but I had by now lost all credibility as a skilled orienteer in her eyes) keep going. How long before they send the search party? Well, even a blind squirrel gets an acorn on occasion, and a lost orienteer sometimes hits a trail. And of course it must be the trail he was aiming for all along, right? Lesson #2 – check the orientation of the trail, first, not after you’ve wandered back and forth for 10 minutes trying to find the trail junction which just has to be a little bit further ahead. How come these three very noticeable reentrants I have passed aren’t shown on my trail? Lesson #3 – no matter how hard you try to make the map conform to your expectations, it won’t if you’re not where you think you are. Lesson #4 – learn from your mistakes (again).
Thanks to Josef for your hard work and giving us the challenge of a new map. I look forward to going back and doing better next time! Joe H.
I’m the chump that got stumped ; ) . I bought my DNF score when I traded speed for map contact. Payback began with some barbed wire 20m below control 12 – no cuts, just a bruise. Interest payments began just after control 13 when I decided to head in.
The path that I thought went to the finish point didn’t go there at all. Trees along the path are marked with gray paint. It crosses a stream and passes the Cooper Cemetary and has a sign that points to Cooper Mountain. I back-traced and ultimately wandered to the finish by following the sounds of chatting around the check in point.
The nearest web reference for Cooper Cemetary is by Yanceyville. Sure, I was a little off track – but not that far, and I was below the south side of the map.
Although I didn’t finish, I had great time exploring the area. Birkhead is loaded with unique features and it will serve for many future meets that should not be missed.
Michael
The results starting from #2 are still not right, but I don’t know exactly what is wrong yet. (I sent the data off to Ken. for his analysis… maybe he will look in to it.
Regarding Valdimir’s comment on recalculating the course… Since #14 was also misplaced then we need the finish to be at #13, or #11 for the brown course. Fortunately the errors were at the ends of the course.
