Chapel Hill Street-O, 10 November 2018

A chilly and clear day brought out several dozen orienteers to try their hand at an urban score-O in the streets and greenways of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.  It was especially great to see nearly 20 JROTC cadets from Davie Co. come out for some urban navigation challenges.

Controls were spread over a very large area, and as expected no one really came too close to getting them all.  This made the decisions about which controls to skip very important.  Many people seemed to skip the lower-point controls, buying them more time to acquire the ones with larger values.  Other people seemed to concentrate on acquiring a lot of relatively low point controls.  (In the end, both strategies seemed to pay off about equally.)  Other orienteers reported being lured away from their plans by a nearby high-value control, which after acquiring it, left them no time to get several medium-valued controls.  One of the big challenges of this sort of race is to figure out when it is advantageous to deviate from your original plan, and when it’s best to stick to it.

There was a problem with control #62, which unfortunately cost several people some wasted time.  The control was a short pole near a bridge that commemorated the boy scout troop that helped to install the bridge.  The coursetter checked that clue before the Fall hurricanes, which evidently flooded the area and washed the pole away.  I felt particularly bad for the couple of competitors who wasted time looking for the missing control, and then came back late to the finish late, incurring a stiff time penalty.  (Of course these folks could have skipped other controls to come back to the finish earlier, and so their penalty is not entirely because of the missing post.)  As a compromise, I decided to relax the stiff time penalty a bit:  instead of losing 9 points in the first 0-1 minute of being late, I only deducted 4 points.  (I only relaxed this penalty for people who clearly attempted to get #62).

Finally, BOK member Brian Thompson has uploaded the map of this year’s course to his Route Gadget page here.  Please consider uploading your gps route onto Brian’s page so that we can all see how competitors attacked this long course.

Thanks to all who came out — let’s do it again next year!  Results follow; send comments or corrections to Dave at dw.orienteer@gmail.com
