Results for December 15, 2013 Umstead West
We had beautiful weather for any time of year, yet alone December 15. The previous days’ rain gave way to clear sunny sky, with temperature cool enough for comfortable running but enough warmth that even sitting at the start/finish was pleasant.
Josef Trzicky designed advanced courses with a couple of long legs, both of which proved to be a challange for various orienteers. There was also some confusion introduced by the fact that the start/finish location we chose is actually off the map and was not marked accurately. However, running times overall were quite rapid.

(Terese and I identified the amphibian we observed while placing controls in the morning: an Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens), Red Eft Stage (here is a typical picture we found on the web). These amphibians live aquatically as larvae and adults, but leave the water as a juvenile to live on the moist forest floor for a year or two. The juvenile stage will normally hide under leaf litter, logs, bark, and stones, but are sometimes observed out in the open after rainfall. The bright orange/red coloration is thought to signal to predetators of its toxicity.)
