Chapel Hill Street-O, 05 November 2017

It was a perfect day for distance running (low 50’s and overcast) and 24 brave orienteers came out to Hargraves Community center in Chapel Hill to attempt the inaugural Chapel Hill street-O. 44 ‘controls’ were spread over a 21 square-kilometer area, requiring well over 25 miles to clear. In the weekend’s most impressive performance, Aidan Minto from Indiana Crossroads Orienteering cleared the course in just under the four hour time limit — with seven and a half minutes to spare. Others who were out on the course can realize how impressive Aidan’s effort was!

Rather than punch the standard orange and white control flags, racers navigated to a circled location on the map and then answered a question about an object in plain sight. The questions were designed to be easy, just to prove that you were there; and most were non-controversial. However, there were common problems with #34, #46, and #47, even though many people answered these correctly. To be fair to those who actually did get the corerect answers, in the results below I gave partial credit for these controls to people who were clearly there but who missed the question. A couple other hard scoring decisions had to be made — sorry if you came out on the losing end of those decisions. Send comments or corrections to Dave at dw.orienteer@gmail.com

Finally, thanks to Vladimir Stemkovski for help with control pickup. 😉
