Results — Dorothea Dix — 25 March 2018
Last Sunday, 12 orienteers were drawn to Dorothea Dix park in Raleigh to try their hand at two urban sprints. In the NC Piedmont, orienteers are so accustomed to forest maps that are predominantly white (open woods), with scattered bits of green (vegetation) and black (rock & trails). So when competitors first turned-over the Dix map, it seemed quite alien — dominated by yellow (open fields), tan (pavement), and gray (buildings). Navigating efficiently around and among buildings played a huge role on both courses. Several controls were nestled in architectural nooks, and runners needed to read the map carefully to find them. Running a straight line between controls was generally impossible, and occasionally, the best route choice involved an initial heading that was quite different from that of one’s destination. Many legs provided route choice, but not all decisions were consequential — occasionally, the options were so similar that the time taken to choose an option was longer than the best option’s advantage. Of course on other legs, a wrong decision could result in a lot of extra wasted time. We look forward to re-visiting Dorothea Dix and holding more sprint events in the future.

Thanks also to Matt Craig and Tony Lawrence, who offered to help wich control pickup, but whose service ended up not being needed in this small venue. Finally, thanks to klub president Joseph Huberman for arranging for BOK to be able to orienteer in this excelllent sprint venue.
