Schenck Forest Snooker-O (and Swim Meet), March 15 2009
Once again, the Schenck Forest event brought out the rain (Two years ago, we had three cloudbursts – one as I was putting out the controls on Sunday morning, one during the event, and one as we were picking up controls after the event. Last year, the rain threatened during the event but waited and let loose while I was picking up the last control near the cars.). This year, the event was in the middle of four days of continuous raining (but as promised, there was no dust).
In spite of the rain, we had a nice turnout of the usual hardcore orienteers only. Thus, there were no participants on the White Course and only one on the Yellow Course (would have competed in a longer course, but arrived late). There were five on the Orange, five on the Brown, and twenty tried out the Snooker-O Course. One of our participants was from Charlotte and one was from Ontario.
Congratulations to Brian Thompson for scoring the highest point total (32) on the Snooker-O. He did this without crossing Richland Creek. He did, however, visit every other control on the course.
Nine participants on the Snooker-O course and the five Brown Course participants crossed (waded or swam) Richland Creek. But no one made more than one round trip across the creek (which just goes to prove that orienteers may be crazy, but they are not stupid).
Many of you indicated that you enjoyed the Snooker-o format and some spoke of ways to make it even better. Please send along any ideas that you may have and we will try it again (I would like to do it under drier conditions).
Thanks must be extended to Mihai Ibanescu who gave me the idea for the Snooker-O. Thanks also to Mihai and Ken Hanson for reviewing the courses and helping me get through the procedure of converting the courses from Condes to PDF for printing at Kinkos. Thanks for everyone’s patience while Ken and I had to solve a last minute problem with the electronic aspects of event that cropped up at start time. Thanks to Terese Camp for helping with the registration and to Ken for being willing to teach the Beginners Class (though we did not need one since the rain discouraged beginners from enjoying an afternoon in the woods). Thanks to Artem Kazantsev, Vladimir Stemkovski, Ken Hanson, Ken Walsh, and Michael Madigan for picking up controls after the meet.
Thanks to Army National Guard members who were holding exercises in Schenck Forest on Saturday. Their presence helped me to not feel so alone as I spent all Saturday afternoon putting out controls in the driving rain. At least someone else was “enjoying” their day in the woods.
It would have been very discouraging if, after all the efforts to put on the event, no one showed up, so thanks to each of you who came out to participate under such inclement conditions. The thanks for putting on the event that many of you expressed (both verbally and by your presence) was very gratifying. See you all next time.
