Members meet, 25 March, Dorothea Dix

Filed under: Latest News by David Waller on March 13th, 2018

On Sunday March 25, BOK will hold our first meet at Dorothea Dix park in Raleigh.  This event is open to BOK members, members of other orienteering clubs, and active members of the U.S. military.  We will offer two short (appx. 2.5 km) urban sprints.  Sprint orienteering can provide a qualitatively different experience than our more typical style of forest orienteering.  All decision-making and navigation happens very quickly, and losing contact with the map can cost a competitor the few seconds that often separate the winner from the rest of the pack.  For members with little experience with urban sprints, check out this Youtube video, which shows a recent sprint race in the streets of Berga, Germany.

Register for the event before 5:00 on Friday, March 23 here.  The meet director will print both maps for each participant, unless you email us that you only will want one.  Park in the green-painted spaces at the HHS Medical Assistance parking lot (GPS coordinates for parking = 35.771511, -78.661543) for a very short walk to the start shelter (GPS coordinates of start/finish = 35.771240, -78.661300).  Start any time between noon and 2:00, but please be off your course by 2:30, when we will pickup controls.  Help with control pickup will be appreciated.
